DJ has had an unbelievably positive impact on my mother-in-law’s life. She has always had cats, but when her favorite, Bear, passed away about three years ago, she needed time to grieve. Last fall, she became more open to adopting. About that time, I received an email that there was a record number
of cats overcrowding the shelter at Dallas Animal Services. I had never been there before, but because of the desperate situation, we decided to go and save a life.
We had a very positive experience at Dallas Animal Services. The cat adoption room was clean and open and airy and didn’t smell. The cats were easily accessible for us to hold and play with them. We were there for over two hours, getting to know several of the cats. The personnel were very helpful, but not intrusive.
Since my mother-in-law has dementia, we decided to rename the cat with her son’s initials to make it easy for her to remember. The cat now known as DJ is so special. He plays like a kitten, yet he’s also incredibly loving and very content to be a lap cat. He adjusted to his new surroundings right away and is now King of the Castle. My mother-in-law is crazy about him! If she gets a glass of milk, he does too. If she gets a ham sandwich, he gets some ham too. If she gets up in the middle of the night, she carries him to the bathroom with her. And he rubs on her and gums her (marking her as his own).
DJ and my mother-in-law truly are soul mates. He could not have come into our lives at a better time. He is the best medicine, the best friend and the most loving companion possible. He really has made a difference in her quality of life and we are so very grateful for sweet DJ.
